Caorle's typical dishes

Caorle's typical food and restaurant

Caorle’s cuisine is based on the traditions of the local fishermen: fish is the basis of many dishes (fried or grilled sole, sea bass, gilthead bream, grey mullet, cuttlefish stew, fried squid, scampi etc.) accompanied by hot polenta. The influence of Venice has contributed fried food, soups and open-fire roasts. The typical dishes of Caorle include the European spider crab (the best are those fished in April) cooked simply and served as a delicious starter, the sarde in saor, a typical poor person’s dish (fried sardines macerated in oil, salt, vinegar and fried onion) or eel on the spit (spèo de bisàto). The most popular first courses are rice-based dishes (the classic version from Veneto is risi e bisi – rice and peas) combined with vegetables (courgettes, tomatoes, pumpkin, beans, potatoes and asparagus) with fish, shellfish or other seafood.
